Most guitar teachers will hand you a scale and tell you to practice it until it clicks.

That's how I learned too — and it was slow, frustrating, and had nothing to do with the music I actually wanted to play.

I started teaching guitar at 14. Not because I had it all figured out, but because I'd already spent years watching how the best teachers worked — and I had one burning question that's driven everything since: What would the best guitar teacher in the world actually do?

Not the most credentialed. Not the most technically advanced. The one who gets you playing the songs you care about, faster than you thought possible, without wasting your time on things that don't matter.

That question is still what I ask before every lesson.

After 26 years and nearly 30,000 lessons, here's what I know for certain: most students don't fail because they lack talent. They fail because nobody showed them the right system. Fifteen focused minutes a day beats two hours of noodling every time. The right song at the right moment teaches more than a month of exercises.

I teach with one mindset: you should eventually be better than me. That's not modesty, that's the standard. When I'm constantly trying to figure out how to make you surpass me, I never stop looking for better, faster ways to get you there.

Two of my students got back-to-back full scholarships to music college. I've had students who'd never touched a guitar go on to play professionally. Every single one of them started where you are.
